While oil pulling, which is the practice of swishing around coconut oil (or other oils) inside your mouth for 20 minutes every day may sound like the latest fad that sounds ridiculous, it’s actually an ancient Ayurvedic practice that is an all-natural way of getting whiter teeth and healthier gums.

How to Do It

1. First select the kind of oil you want to use, namely coconut or olive as they are the easiest to get your hands on.

2. Put 1-2 teaspoons in your mouth and swish it around for 20 minutes. This will help break down bacteria in your mouth.

3. Be careful not to ingest it though! Not only is drinking that much oil every day unhealthy, it’ll also be full of the bacteria that has been inside your mouth.

4. Spit the oil out into something other than your sink – or you’ll just clog up your pipes and leave a mess.

5. Rinse with warm water.

6. Go ahead and brush!
